Different lens

Core focus

This unit focuses on different ways of seeing the Arab world in terms of traditional practices through to life in contemporary, dynamic cultures and societies, with a particular focus on calligraphy, veiling and the pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj. It highlights, through an analysis of iconic and stereotyped images and case study research, how this region of the world has changed over time and in different locations to be reinvented, contested or hybridised to accommodate new ways of being in the world.
